X-Men Legends II Rise Of Apocalypse

In X-Men Legends II, the X-Men must join their enemy the Brotherhood to fight a greater menace–Apocalypse. The sequel to the team-based role-playing game X-Men Legends lets you play as one of many X-Men, and use and combine his or her unique abilities to defeat enemies. Rise of Apocalypse includes new mutant powers, playable characters, and environments. X-Men Legends II also offer multiplayer play, which lets you work cooperatively against other teams of mutants.

The X-Men have been around for a long time, having been created several decades back by Stan “The Man” Lee. Since then the merry band of mutants have starred in many games, most of which were horrible. Everything changed when Activision released “X-Men Legends” on the PS2 (it was also released on PC and X-Box) and showed the world what a great X-Men game should be like. Taking what the X-Men are known for, working as a team, XML was an action-RPG in the same vein as Diablo. So you know the drill, grab a team and go to location A, beat the holy Hell out of everything that moves while leveling up and acquiring new items, then continue on to location B. A year or so later Activision released the sequel, “X-Men Legends 2: ROA”, fixing most of the problems bogging down the original. Then a few months later they released it on the PSP, with a few new goodies thrown in.
“X-Men Legends 2: ROA” is for all intents and purposes the same exact game as its console brethren, with some exclusive add-ons to sweeten the deal of course! First up are four exclusive characters (Cable, Cannonball, X-Man and Dark Phoenix) and although they do add to the game they don’t really add too much to the story or anything else. Not to mention the fact that if you asked any X-Fan what four characters they’d want to see I doubt, with the possible exception of Cable, that any of those guys would make the list. I’m not saying that the new characters suck, it’s just that I’d rather have some established X-Men added to the roster. Also new are the nine viewable (and playable) comic book missions. These missions are the equivalent to the flashback missions seen in XML, except that they showcase much more memorable times in the X-Men universe. For example, one of these comic missions sees your team storming the orbiting Asteroid M, as seen in the “Fatal Attractions” storyline. And just think, there’s nine of them all together so any X-Geek is going to have a great time reliving those events.
Of course all this mutant goodness doesn’t come without its price. The port over to the PSP has left the game with some X-tremely (hehe) long load times. Ok so maybe not that long, but on average be ready to stare at the game’s many background screens for at least 30 seconds. It’s not a deal breaker by any means but it’s definitely worth noting. Veterans of the first game shouldn’t have too much of a problem though as the load times are on par with that game’s. Another problem that may bug some players is the overall darkness of the game. Now I’m not talking about the story being rated M or anything, I’m talking about the game literally being too dark. Certain levels such as the interiors found in The Savage Lands are so dark that you’ll often times find yourself attacking an opponent only to realize that you’re attacking one of your own team mates. Again, this is not a deal breaker in any sense but just know that playing XML2 anywhere where there’s sunlight will seriously hamper your gameplay.
So are these additions to an already great game worth you buying it (again)? Well if you haven’t played the PS2 version then slap yourself for not already having this game in your PSP. For those of you who have the console version though, check it out and see if you’ll like it. It’s the same game but the PSP’s exclusives may lure you in, plus you can take it on the go. Still, the long load times may turn off some players but stick through it and you’ll find one of the most rewarding experiences to be found on the PSP.

ATARI Classic Evolved

Atari Classics Evolved brings back everything that the origin of all gaming, the Atari 2600, brought to us many, many years ago. For anyone who has been with video games from the very beginning, this ones for you. For under $20, you can receive every Atari 2600, that you’ve waited so long to play again. Atari Classics Evolved self-define ‘pick-up and play’. If your one of those types of gamers, then this game is for you!
The point of this game is to complete all forty-four challenges. Each default game comes along with four challenges each. Once all of these are complete, you unlock the Atari 2600 console. This lets you play from a huge list of classic games. Of course, being a puzzle game, Atari Classics Evolved comes with no story whatsoever.
What makes this game special however, is that it comes comes packed with an ‘evolved’ version of each classic (list below), which feature better graphics quality, and for some classics, different stages. For example, the evolved version of Pong came along with an air hockey version, a table tennis version, and several others. For some extra excitement, ACE makes you turn the PSP so that the d-pad is at the bottom for certain games, including centipede and millipede. This offers a different experience with the PSP system.
Atari Classics Evolved comes pre-packed with the following games. These all have evolved versions: Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Battlezone, Centipede, Lunar Lander, Millipede, Missile Command, Super Breakout, Tempest, Warlords and Pong. All others must be unlocked by completing all challenges.
Being a remake of the old Atari games, ACE isn’t the most graphically enhanced game. It certainly does use some of the PSP’s features with its ‘evolved’ versions. Again, if your looking for high-quality graphics, this game is not for you.
On the audio side of things, ACE offers you exactly what the original Atari 2600 offered. *Beep*. *Beep*. *Beep*. On the good side, the audio was relatively well improved in the evolved versions. Again, don’t expect anything special.
Unfortunately, you need to be quite a self-motivator to last long in this game, as there is minimal challenge in this game. In fact, I would highly suggest download a 100% game save. I would say that the only reason you would really want this games is to re-experience the old Atari 2600 games, or for some great pick-up and play puzzle action.

Tales Of Eternia

Reid Hershel, Farrah Oersted, and a mysterious girl named Meredy must embark on a journey to learn the truth on the fate of their world. The story begins when Reid and Farrah attend to the crash of a spaceship near their hometown, Rashea. As they investigate the place of the incident, a weird blue animal leads them to a young girl injured by the crash who speaks an unknown language. Further on, Reid and Farrah learn that the mysterious girl, named Meredy, came here to prevent a deadly collision between her planet, Celestia, and Reid and Farrah’s world, Inferia. With the help of some friends picked up along the way, Reid, Farrah, and Meredy set out on a quest to collect a set of spiritual beings, their only hope to save both of their planets from a terrible disaster. Control 1 character out of a party of 4 through magnificent 2D environments and 3D world maps. Master the “Tales of” Linear Motion Battle System; built around different striking techniques, real-time combos and spells. Discover a bunch of challenging mini games perfectly implemented to the story that will make the characters earn unique features.
Thank you Namco, for bringing the Tales series to a new platform. Even though this is a remake, this is still a fabulous game. I live in Japan, so I didn’t have to wait for Japanese games. When I got this game, I thought it was going to be worse than the original Tales of Eternia, but heck, I was wrong.
There are two worlds, Inferia and Celestia, and they had never communicated with each other for over 1000 years. If you are in one world, the other world will look upside down. Then, when Reid and Farah, went into the forest, a mysterious spaceship crashed about 10 feet where Reid and Farah were. Inside, was a girl named Meredy, from Celestia. Celestia sent her to warn Inferia of something called ‘dark matter,’ since Celestia had more advanced technology than Inferia. But there was one problem, Meredy speaks an ancient language, Melnics. So naturally, Reid and Farah could not understand. There, they decided to find someone who can understand, then Farah thought of their friend, Keele, who was a genius. There, the story begins.
The characters you control and the cities are all 2D, but the world map is in 3D. That is one of the reasons that makes this game great. At some points in this game, you will have animated scenes, which are awesome. When the character speaks, they will have a speech bubble and are sometimes spoken aloud.
This game isn’t turn-based, like most RPGs but is in real time. You will have full control of one character, and they can walk, run, stumble, attack, special attack, and jump. You can level up your slash and thrust, which will allow you to learn special attacks. But beware, the special attacks costs TP (Tech points). If you run out of TP, you will not be able to use special attacks unless it is restored. The mages, ( Keele and Meredy) learn their spells from Craymels, or spirits.
Sound and Music: Perfect. The tunes just fit every occasion, from battling to walking. When your character in battle, does a special attack, first he/she yells out the attack name, then do it. The voices could be better if Namco made the mouths move.
Controls: They are really basic, but you can put the controls to any where you want. You don’t use the start button to access the menu, but one of the buttons. To use a special attack, you assign that special attack to a direction, then press the direction and the special attack button. It’s really quite simple.
Overall: A great RPG, action packed, I would highly recommend it.

Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire

Harry, Ron, and Hermione are back in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, a game based on J.K. Rowling’s fourth book. The game follows Harry, the wizard-in-training, as he confronts a fire-breathing dragon, rescues friends from the icy depths of the Black Lake, and navigates the twisting corridors of a maze. As Harry, Ron, or Hermione, you can cast a variety of spells in both single-player and cooperative modes.
.
The story line is fairly simple. It’s another year at Hogwarts but this year things are different. It’s time for the Tri-Wizard cup and two other wizard schools are staying at Hogwarts for this tournament. Only 3 people are chosen and some how Harry’s name is a fourth. Now Harry must compete in this tournament and who knows what dangers lay ahead. The plot is very simple but fans of the series will enjoy it because a fair amount of the book/movie is in this game. The three tasks are here at least… Some new things are thrown in but when you see the movie you have to realize that a lot of stuff just wouldn’t work in a game. The added stuff does make sense though.
The game play is tame but much better than the other games. Instead of having free roam of the school (I do miss that) you pick levels. The levels are large and have multiple paths. Once you beat a level you can return it and start at the central hub. There aren’t a lot of levels and most levels contain 5 tri wizard shields. You need to collect X amount and finish the latest level to unlock the next. Level selection feels a bit weak. The game also stuffs in a challenge area but the challenges are kind of boring and the first is a bit unfair because I have no idea how to cast that one spell but sometimes it is cast and it’s a great way to max that one spell.
Some levels are missing from the console version. It’s a shame but we do get some mini games that are multi player. It’s a nice touch. Speaking of multiplayer the mini games can be used with just 1 game disc or two. Also, you can play the 3 main levels with friends if they each have the game. In those three main levels Harry, Ron and Hermy all run around and fight. It’s kind of cool and at the start of a level you can pick which character you want to play as, same for multi and single. They all play the same though…
In the game there are a couple different things the game has you collecting. Tri-Wizard Shields which there are 30 of. Also, there are different things to hit with a Jinx in the levels. Hit them all to unlock new cards. There are normal viewing cards for areas and enemies. However, when you collect beans, they come from defeated enemies or by hitting different objects, you can buy character cards. These cards feature scenes from the movie, still scenes I should say. Each card requires a different amount of beans but each card is a skill. When you select your character at the start of a level you can pick three cards. Some are just stamina (health) boosters or some makes certain spells more powerful or you can use the triple Jinx which I like because it clears areas much faster. Also in each level is an invisible card and while I could find one I couldn’t figure out how to get to it before it vanished again…
Also, the game keeps tracking of the mastering of a spell. The more you master the higher your rank goes. The higher your rank the more cards that get unlocked. Seems very easy at first but the last few levels didn’t net me any new cards. Besides the normal levels and stuff the challenge levels are a bit different. One has you on your broom racing from a dragon. A very neat chase I might add. The next is the underwater one which really felt like a 3rd person shooter on rails. The final is the maze which plays like a maze and it almost like a normal level but its Potter only but it features a chase during the second part of it.
The game is fairly long. Took me close to ten hours to beat it and I didn’t have everything. I found the game to be a great way to spend a lazy Sunday and I actually want to go back and finish getting 100%. That doesn’t happen often. The game was just fun to play. The level designs were interesting and the different paths kept me entertained. I never actually got bored either while playing and most games give me that one dull part but this game was just that entertaining. It’s the not the best action adventure game around but for a portable it sure is nice. The lack of the free roaming is a shame but since it wasn’t in the console version either I’m not too bitter. So, if you want a tiny bit more of game go with the console version but the PSP version does have the mini games and is portable. Oh and the load times are rather quick!

WTF

Created specifically for the PSP system, WTF is a crazy collection of fun and addictive mini-games that drive the player to perform sometimes trivial, sometimes mind-bending, but always fun jobs in pursuit of the almighty dollar. The latest in a long line of unique Japanese games that have gained popularity in the United States, WTF delivers gamers compelling, bite-sized morsels of frenzied arcade-style action unlike anything ever seen on the PSP system.
Mr. Walter Theodore Friedlander rises up early every morning to a big bowl of cereal and a tall glass of milk. He needs all the energy he can digest in preparation for what his strange line of work requires of him. His occupation? Professional oddjobber. You see, Mr. WTF doesn’t know what the day has in store for him. Forces beyond his control dictate the tasks at hand, and if he is to rake in enough money to fund for tomorrow’s bed and breakfast, he needs to be prepared for absolutely anything, even if it crosses into the borders of insanity.
A daily routine may or may not look something like this: the local wood-chopper has called in sick, and so Mr. WTF is hired in as a substitute. He begins chopping the cylinders of wood placed in front of him, but after 50 in a row the repetitiveness starts to bore the hell out of him. A cute rabbit suddenly jumps onto his chopping block, but Mr. WTF’s mind has wandered off elsewhere and the next thing he knows, he’s off looking for another employer in his maroon-stained attire.
Most of the 40 activities here require nothing more than a few button presses repeated ad infinitum/nauseam, with little going on to hold one’s attention. But at least some of them are weird enough to make you go “WTF?!”
There is an activity where you have to look through a series of pictures to determine whether a real or fake ghost resides within. Another puts you in the shoes of a traffic checker, tasked with counting the number of humans that walk past you amongst the rush of pet animals, aliens and blobs of goop. And then there’s one where you have to guess the sexy lady’s phone number, deducing the correct one through the facial responses you elicit from failed attempts (this is as hard as it is in real life).
However, as always, there are a couple that are pretty good, but still not that great. Bouncer Bash puts you in the middle of a rock concert full of raving fans. As they attempt to run across the pitch and clamber onto the stage, you have to grab ‘em and fling ‘em away, perhaps tossing ‘em into other fans at a distance beyond your reach. Happy Bullets sees you assuming the role of a hitman with a sniper rifle. In a similar vein to the Silent Scope sniper’em-up titles, you zoom in on the building opposite and search for the target to be knocked off, be it a man dressed in a soccer uniform or a lady holding a tuna fish in her left hand. Definitely better than separating boy chicks from girl chicks, right? Unfortunately, these more interesting mini-games are far and few in between, and even then there still isn’t enough depth to them to keep you going for the time needed to earn enough cents.
Yes. That’s cents, not dollars!!
The aim of the game is to make money; it’s not a free world after all. Mr. WTF puts in the hard yards for his food and lodging; you do it to unlock more mini-games and a bounty of 99.9% useless trinkets. The first strike is the paltry paycheck you receive for each job, meaning that you have to play the majority of tedious games religiously to earn enough to unlock some new stuff. The second strike goes to the trinkets, randomly obtained through vending machines. There a lots of them, but they do nothing apart from attaching themselves to a wall of text for you to read through should you become that bored from all the work. The third strike hits home when you come to realise that not only do you earn the equivalent of peanuts, but when you finally do manage to fill up a small sack of them, you can’t buy anything decent. So what’s the point of trying? Especially when real work is more exciting than most of the ‘games’ packaged up in here.
Mr. WTF deserves our sympathy; he’s stuck in a rut he’ll never be able to escape from, forced to endure day after day of tedium until the cows come home. And even then, he’ll probably be employed to feed the white ones mushrooms and the brown ones flowers.
There’s nothing else out there quite like WTF. It’s weird, very weird. Mini-game compendiums are usually a mixed bag of sweet and sour, but WTF contains more of the cringing variety. Unlike in Wario Ware, where the rapid switching between games maintained interest, WTF’s long running time will lose you after a couple of minutes… at best. The funky presentation is uniquely invigorating, but it doesn’t make up for the dry content that gels it all together. Thus, at the end of the day, WTF spells out plenty of WORK and lots of TIME, but barely an ounce of FUN. Feel FREE to DOWNLOAD these game and try it your psp.
